Direct Reading Gauges:

These gauges are essential on any boiler installation as they are designed to show the actual Liquid/Gas interface. This is done by means of an a sight glass. This is a gauge of last resort. Given that any other gauge is giving a spurious reading a boiler technician should always check his direct reading gauge.

Remote Reading Gauges:

These gauges are used for boiler control on a continuous basis. They detect the boiler water level with a sensor (or probe) and transmit
this information to a convenient location on the firing floor and also to a control room.

Design Concept:

Clark-Reliance level gauges have been purpose built for STEAM applications. They are extremely hardwearing and designed for reliable service under tough conditions associated with boiler service. Alternatively, when level gauges are required for non-boiler applications e.g. on tanks and process applications one would use of the Jerguson product line. Jerguson Level Gauges, also manufactured by Clark-Reliance. These gauges are available in variety of materials for specialist service up to 10 000 psi. (approx 70MPa)

Due to the fact that Jerguson Gauges meet the standards laid down by UOP these gauges are common on petrochemical installations. In fact Jerguson was the gauge of choice when the plants of Natref and Sasol I were originally built in Sasolburg.
